Paris has an extensive transportation system. This includes the metro system which gets individuals around town as well as out of the city, and there’s also regional trains that pass through Paris and to the suburbs. Knowing the difference is important as the tickets are different.

Metro Lines: Paris boasts a user-friendly metro system, where each line is identified by a number and color. Accessible with a ticket for entry (though not required for exit), the metro allows seamless transfers within the system using the same ticket. The frequency of trains, arriving every 3 to 5 minutes, increases during peak hours, ensuring convenient travel. 

RER Trains: Regional RER trains traverse Paris but primarily serve to link suburban regions. Distinguished by letters (A, B, C, etc.), these trains cover extended zones beyond the city limits. Unlike metro tickets, RER tickets vary based on distance. With a lower frequency, RER trains arrive approximately every 15 minutes, with increased service during peak periods. It’s essential to retain the ticket for exiting RER stations. These trains are often double-deckers and the seating is designed for inter-city travel yet strollers / prams can be left in the area by the door with accessibility seating nearby.

Buses: Paris’ metropolitan area boasts an extensive bus network, offering a convenient alternative for exploration. Bus travel can be as straightforward as taking the metro. A valid bus pass or ticket is necessary when boarding yet tickets can also be purchased via text message. Stollers / prams may enter via the back door of the bus and there is a large space in the middle for there and wheelchairs. Usually the ticket can also be validated in the middle fo the bus, if not, visit the front to validate. 

Bikes: For a more leisurely exploration, consider the shared bike options available in Paris. Bike-sharing services like Velibo, Lime, and others provide a delightful means of touring the city outskirts.

Whether you choose the metro, RER trains, buses, or opt for a scenic bike ride, always keep your ticket handy and don’t forget to validate it, as routine security checks are conducted by police. This ensures a smooth and enjoyable journey as you traverse the enchanting streets of Paris.
